If you join the newsletter or Reader Club, we collect your email address — plus, only if you choose to share them, your first name, your birthday month (just the month — never the day or year), and a mailing address for the occasional birthday postcard. All of it is stored with MailerLite, our newsletter provider, under their privacy policy.
Your email is used to send you book news and — if you use the Reader Club — to send login links and remember your reading progress. The site also keeps simple, first-party reading statistics (which chapters get read, how far readers get) so Jessie can see what's working; readers appear in those statistics only as anonymous codes, never as email addresses. When someone asks for a login link, the site also notes whether one was sent (and if not, why — an address that hasn't confirmed its subscription yet, say), filed under a coded form of the address rather than the address itself, so Jessie can tell whether signing in is working. Nothing is ever sold or shared, and there is no third-party ad tracking.
Reader Club members can leave comments ("letters") on chapters under a display name of their choosing; those are visible to other readers, and Jessie can remove them. Chapter reactions are simple counters. Neither ever displays your email address.
While a book is in reader beta (right now, Mr. Darcy’s Brother), its chapters record a little more: which chapters you open and finish, how far you read, and reading time while the page is active, plus where you first found the beta (for example, FanFiction.net or the newsletter). A few technical details keep those numbers honest: a random code for each page view, whether the page was newly opened, reloaded or reached with the Back button, whether the questions at the end of a chapter came onto your screen, the language your browser reports, and whether it translated the page. That record is tied to a random ID kept in your browser — or, if you're logged in, to a hashed code for your membership — and never to your email address. (A login link asked for on a beta chapter carries that random ID, so whichever browser you open it in counts as the same reader.) The answers you choose to give are kept with it: paragraph marks, the optional tap at the end of a chapter, and the checkpoint answers and cover vote, with which covers you opened larger before choosing (a note you've typed is saved when you press Save, and also when you leave the box or the page). All of it is optional, and it's used only to revise the book. To have yours deleted, email jessie@jessiemichaelsbooks.com— with the address you log in with, if you read while logged in. If you read without logging in, nothing links those answers to you except that random ID, so include your beta ID: it's shown here, and on the beta's “How the beta works” page, in any browser where you've opened a beta chapter.

The site sets a cookie when you log in to the Reader Club (so you stay logged in for 30 days) and uses your browser's local storage to remember your theme and your place in each book. While a book is in reader beta, it also keeps a one-word note of how you first arrived, if the link you followed says where it came from (a newsletter link, say) or you came to the beta's own page, and whether your first visit started at the home page with no link (a typed address) or somewhere else — even if you never open the beta; it's only used if you do. For beta readers it also keeps the random ID described above and where you last stopped reading, so a chapter can ask you, once, whether that was a good place to stop. There is no advertising and no third-party tracking.
Every email includes an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing also ends Reader Club access, since free reading is a subscriber benefit. If you'd like your data deleted entirely — your subscriber record, comments, and reading progress — email jessie@jessiemichaelsbooks.com and it will be removed.
Subscriptions use double opt-in: nothing is stored until you confirm from your own inbox. Reading statistics identify readers only by anonymous codes. MailerLite may process data on servers in the EU and the United States; this site is operated from the United States. It is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
